additive identity property of 0 | Adding zero to a number gives a sum identical to the given number. |

associative property of addition | Changing the grouping of 3 or more addends does not change the sum. |
attribute | A characteristic of an object, such as color, shape, size, etc. |
bar graph | A graph that uses height or length of rectangles to compare data. |
bar model | A model that uses bars to represent known and unknown quantities and the relationship between these quantities. |
category | A collection of things sharing a common attribute. |
circle | A closed shape with no sides and no vertices. |
closed shape | A shape with all the sides connected. |
column | A vertical arrangement of numbers or information in an array or table. |
commutative property of addition | Changing the order of the addends does not change the sum. |
compare | To decide if one number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number. |
compose | To put together smaller numbers to make larger numbers. |
composite shape | A shape that is made from 2 or more geometric shapes. |
cone | A solid shape with a circular base, a curved surface, and one vertex. |
count back | A way to subtract. |
count on | A way to add. |
count up | A way to subtract. Finding the difference by adding up from the smaller number to the larger number. |
cube | A solid shape with 6 square faces. |
curved surface | A rounded surface. |
cylinder | A solid shape with 2 circular bases and a curved surface. |
data | A collection of information. |
date | A given month, day, and year. |
day | There are 24 hours in a day. |
decompose | To separate a number or shape into 2 or more parts. |
difference | The result when one number is subtracted from another. |
different | Compare 2 or more objects or figures to find what is not the same. |
digit | Any of the symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. |
digital clock | A clock that shows the time with numbers of hours and minutes; usually separated by a colon. (:) |
doubles | Addition facts with two addends that are the same. |
doubles minus 1 | An addition fact with a double to add and then subtract one. |
doubles plus 1 | An addition fact with a double to add and then add one. |
equal | Having the same amount. |
equal parts | Parts of an object or group that have been divided equally into pieces. (also known as equal shares) |

fact family | A group of related facts that use the same numbers. (also known as related facts) |
false | Not true; incorrect. A false equation does not have the same value on each side of the equal sign. |
fewer | Smaller quantity or amount. |
fewest | A word used when comparing three or more groups of objects. |
flat surface | A surface that is not curved. |
fourth of | One of 4 equal parts. |
fourths | The parts you get when you divide something into 4 equal parts. |
greater than | Greater than is used to compare two numbers when the first number is larger than the second number. |
half-circle | Half of a circle. |
half hour | A unit of time equal to 30 minutes. |
half of | One of 2 equal parts. |
half past | 30 minutes after the hour. |
halves | The parts you get when you divide something into 2 equal parts. |
hexagon | A shape with 6 straight sides and 6 vertices. |
hour | A unit of time equal to 60 minutes. |
hour hand | A short hand on a clock. |
hundred | A number equal to 10 tens or 100 ones. |
is the same as | The meaning of the equal sign. Having the same amount on each side of the equal sign. (also known as equal) |
length | How long something is. The distance from one point to another. |
less than | Less than is used to compare two numbers when the first number is smaller than the second number. |
longer | A word used when comparing the length of two objects. |
longest | A word used when ordering three or more objects by length. |
making ten | A strategy that uses combinations of numbers that add up to ten. |
measure | To find a number that shows the size or quantity of something. |
minus | A symbol that shows subtraction; take away a quantity. |
minute | A unit of time equal to 60 seconds. |
minute hand | The long hand on a clock. |
more | Greater quantity or amount. |
more than | More than can be used to describe an action to mentally add 10 more to a given number. |
most | A word used when comparing three or more groups of objects. |
number | A number indicates how many or how much. |
number line | A diagram that represents numbers as points on a line. |
numeral | A symbol used to represent a number. |
object | A material thing that can be seen and touched. |
ones | A single unit or object. |
order | A sequence or arrangement of things. |
partition | Describes an action to divide shapes into smaller parts. |
picture graph | A graph that uses pictures or symbols to show data. |
place value | The value a digit has because of its place in a number. |
plus | A symbol that shows addition; combine; put together two or more quantities. |
quarter-circle | A fourth of a circle. |
quarter of | One of 4 equal parts. |

sphere | A solid shape with a curved surface. |
square | A shape with 4 sides that are the same length and 4 right angles. |
subtract | Take away, remove,or compare. |
sum | The answer to an addition problem. |
take away | To subtract. |
taller | A word used when comparing the height of two objects. |
tallest | A word used when ordering three or more objects by height. |
tally chart | A chart that uses tally marks to record data |
tally mark | A mark that shows a number or quantity. A tally shows one. A line through four tallies shows five. |
ten | A group of ten ones. One more than nine; one less than eleven. |
tens | Sets of ten ones. (i.e., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90) |
three-dimensional shape | A solid shape that has length, width, and height. |
trapezoid | A 4-sided two-dimensional shape that has exactly one pair of parallel sides. |
triangle | A shape with 3 straight sides and 3 vertices. |
true | Accurate; correct. A true equation has the same value on each side of the equal sign. |
two-dimensional shape | A plane, flat shape that has length and width. |
unequal parts | Parts of a whole that are not the same size. |
unequal shares | Parts of a whole that are not the same size. |
vertex (plural - vertices) | A corner of a shape. (plural - vertices) |
whole | All of an object, a group of objects, shape, or quantity. |
zero | A whole number that tells there are no objects in a set. |
unit | What is used to measure the height or length of an object. |
