Term | Definition |
Numerical Expression | a mathematical expression that contains numbers and operations. |
Variable | a letter used to represent one or more numbers. |
Variable Expression | a mathematical expression that contains numbers, operations and variables. |
Evaluate | the substitution of a number for each variable in an algebraic expression and then calculating the result. |
Area | the number of unit squares that fit inside a two-dimensional shape. |
Volume | the number of unit cubes that fit inside the three-dimensional shape. |
Perfect Square | the product of a number and itself. |
Perfect Cube | the product of a number and itself three times. |
Pythagorean Theorem | For every right triangle, where a and b are legs and c is the hypotenuse, then: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 |
Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem | For every triangle, if a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where a and b are legs and c is the hypotenuse, then the triangle is a right triangle. |
Natural Numbers | also called the Counting Numbers, are all the whole numbers greater than zero. |
Whole Numbers | the natural numbers and zero. |
Integers | the whole numbers and their opposites. |
Rational Numbers | any number that can be written as a fraction of integers. |
Irrational Numbers | any number that can not be written as a fraction of integers. |
Real Numbers | Any number on the real number line. These numbers can be rational or irrational. |
