Term | Definition |
circle | a closed plane curve consisting of all points at a given distance from a point within it called the center. |
center | the middle point, as the point within a circle or sphere equally distant from all points of the circumference or surface, or the point within a regular polygon equally distant from the vertices |
radius | a straight line extending from the center of a circle or sphere to the circumference or surface |
diameter | a straight line passing through the center of a circle or sphere and meeting the circumference or surface at each end |
chord | the line segment between two points on a given curve |
secant | an intersecting line, especially one intersecting a curve at two or more points |
tangent | touching at a single point, as a tangent in relation to a curve or surface that is in contact along a single line or element, as a plane with a cylinder. |
concentric | having a common center, as circles or spheres. |
central angle | an angle formed at the center of a circle by two radii |
inscribed angle | angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose sides contain chords of the circle |
minor arc | less than 90 degrees |
major arc | more than 90 degrees |
semicircle | anything having or arranged in the form of a half of a circle. |
intercepted arc | arc that lies in the interior of an inscribed angle and has endpoints on the angle |
inscribed | to draw or delineate (one figure) within another figure so that the inner lies entirely within the boundary of the outer, touching it at as many points as possible |
circumscribed | to draw a figure around another figure so as to touch as many points as possible |
equidistant | equally distant |
apothem | a perpendicular from the center of a regular polygon to one of its sides |
circumference | the outer boundary, especially of a circular area and perimeter |
arc length | portion of the circumference of the circle |
area | any particular extent of space or surface; part |
sector | a plane figure bounded by two radii and the included arc of a circle |
