Parallel construction (parallelism) | joining similar ideas and giving them emphasis through repetition. Example: The cat scampered around the sofa, on top of the bookcase, and under the recliner. |
Non-Parallel | The cat scampered around the sofa, the bookcase, and under the recliner. |
logical fallacies | arguments built on flawed reasoning (not true). |
denouement | the action that follows the climax as the plot winds down. Also known as resolution. |
formal language | English with precise rules of grammar, spelling, and usage applied. It has a very proper tone and vocabulary. |
Informal language | a more laid back way of speaking |
paraphrasing | rewriting the ideas of others in your own words |
sensory details | words that apply to the five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. |
stage directions | notes within a drama that direct movement of characters to places on the stage |
Thesis | a controlling idea for a whole works that is supported by providing evidence from a variety of sources. |
transitions | words author's use to move from one idea to another such as then, next, before, however, and in spite of. |
