Term | Definition |
Perimeter | The distance around a polygon, found by adding the lengths of the sides |
Area | The number of square units needed to cover a region, found by multiplication |
Volume | The number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure, found by multiplication |
Height | The dimension that must be multiplied by the length and width to determine volume |
Exponent | The tiny raised number (a 2 or 3) that must be written next to the unit in area or volume |
Line symmetry | The property of a figure that can be folded and the two parts will match |
Line of symmetry | The vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line on which you fold a figure to get two matching sides |
Congruent | Figures that have the same size AND shape |
Similar | Figures that have the same shape but are NOT the same size |
Asymmetrical | A figure that CANNOT be folded along a line so that the two parts will match |
Slide | Also called a translation, sliding a figure in a straight line |
Flip | Also called a reflection, flipping a figure over a line |
Turn | Also called a rotation, turning a figure around a point or vertex |
Transformation | A movement of a figure that does not change the size or shape |
Apex | The point where the triangular faces of a pyramid meet |
Translation | Sliding a figure in a straight line |
Reflection | Flipping a figure over a line |
Rotation | Turning a figure around a point or vertex |
Complementary Angles | Two angles that add up to 90 degrees |
Supplementary Angles | Two angles that add up to 180 degrees |
