Term | Definition |
Activation energy | Is the minimum amount of kinetic energy particles need to start the reaction |
Rate of reaction | the change in concentration of a substance in unit time |
Le Chatelier's Principle | If any factor that affects equilibrium is changed, the position of equilibrium will shift to oppose the change. |
Catalyst | Is a substance which speeds up the rate of reaction but remains chemically unchanged. They provide an alternative route which has a lower activation energy |
Dynamic equilibrium | occurs when forward and backward reactions are occurring at equal rates. The concentrations of reactants and products stays constant and the reaction is continuous. |
Temperature increase | If temperature is increased the equilibrium will shift to oppose this and move in the endothermic direction to try and reduce the temperature by absorbing heat. |
Temperature decrease | the equilibrium will shift to oppose this and move in the exothermic direction to try and increase the temperature by giving out heat. |
The Maxwell-Boltzmann energy distribution | shows the spread of energies that molecules of a gas or liquid have at a particular temperature |
Catalysts do not affect | the position of equilibrium |
Effect of catalysts on Maxwell-boltzmann | If the activation energy is lower, more particles will have energy > EA,so the reaction will be faster |
