Term | Definition |
A gas | A gas is defined as a substance that has no well defined boundaries but diffuses rapidly to fill the container in which it is placed |
Kelvin Scale | Temperature can be converted into the kelvin scale by adding 273 to the celsius |
1 kPa | 1000 pa |
1 litre | 1000 cm |
Standard temperature and pressure | 273K & 1x10(5) Pa |
Boyles Law | States that, at constant temperature, the volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure |
Charles' Law | States that, at constant pressure the volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to to its temperature measured on the Kelvin Scale |
Combined gas law equation | P1_V1 = P2_V2 T1 T2 |
Reaction between gases | The volumes of the reacting gases are in the ratio of small whole numbers provided the volumes are measured at the same temperature and pressure |
Avogadro's Law | States that equal volumes of gases contain equal numbers of molecules, under the same conditions of temperature and pressure |
Ideal gases | Gases that obey all the assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases under all conditions of temperature and pressure |
Real Gases | They differ from ideal gases because 1) Forces of attraction and repulsion between molecules and 2) the volume of the molecules is not negligible |
The equation of state for an ideal gas | PV=nRT |
convert Volume in cubic metres - volume in litres | litres X 10(-3) |
Convert cubic metres to cm | cm X 10(-6) |
