Litmus paper: | Red litmus paper will turn blue when dipped in alkali, blue litmus paper will turn red when dipped in acid. |
Phenolpthalein: | Turns from colourless (acid) to pink (alkali). |
Methyl orange: | Turns from red (acid) to yellow (alkali). |
What are acids a source of? | Positive hydrogen ions H+ |
What are alkali's a source of? | Negative hydroxide ions OH- |
Acid + metal -> | Salt + hydrogen |
Acid + metal oxide -> | Salt + water |
Acid + metal hydroxide -> | Salt + water |
Acid + carbonate -> | Salt + carbon dioxide + water |
All common sodium, potassium & ammonium salts are what? | Soluble. |
All nitrates are what? | Soluble. |
Common chlorides (with the exception of silver chloride) are what? | Soluble. |
Common sulfates (except those of barium & calcium) are what? | Soluble. |
Common carbonates (except those of sodium, potassium & ammonium) are what? | Insoluble. |
So basically, all salts are soluble APART FROM: | Silver chloride, barium/calcium sulfate & common carbonates. |
