Term | Definition |
Constant of proportionality- | factor of proportionality: the constant value of the ratio of two proportional quantities x and y; usually written y = kx, where k is the factor of proportionality |
Direct variation- | factor of proportionality: the constant value of the ratio of two proportional quantities x and y; usually written y = kx, where k is the factor of proportionality |
Linear equation- | an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph |
Point-slope form- | useful when we know the y- intercept of a line. However, we are not always given this information. When we know the slope and one point which is not the y -intercept, we can write the equation in point-slope form |
Slope-intercept form- | the most frequently used way to express equation of a line |
Rate of change- | a rate of change that describes how one quantity changes in relation to another relation |
Slope- | is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line |
X-intercept- | the point at which the line crosses the x axis |
Y-axis- | the point at which the line crosses the y axis |
Unit rate- | describes how many units of the first type of quantity corresponds to one unit of the second type of quantity. |
Proportional relationship- | between the two quantities |
Intersecting lines- | lines that intersect with one another |
