Term | Definition |
like fractions | fractions with the same denominator. (ex. 4/10 + 3/10) |
factor | a number that divides into a whole number with a remainder of zero. (ex. 8 has the factors 2 and 4) |
composite number | a whole number that has more than two factors. (ex. 12 has the factors 1, 2, 3, 6, 12) |
greatest common factor | the greatest of the common factors of two or more numbers. (ex. factors of 16 are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 the GCF is 4) |
prime number | a whole number with exactly two factors, 1 and itself. (ex. 2:1,2) |
factor tree | Process of reducing a composite number to prime numbers only. |
prime factorization | A way of expressing a composite number as a product of its prime factors. (ex. 2x2=4) |
