Question | Answer |
Natural decay, radioactivity, or transmutation | one reactant mutates into 2 or more products as it becomes more stable |
Artificial transmutation or bombardment | 2 reactants are added to form new element(s) and/or radioactive particle from table O. |
Half life | time required for half of a naturally radioactive substance to decay. This time is constant. |
Alpha radiation | helium nucleus. +2 charge, Mass of 4, least dangerous radiation |
Beta radiation | electrons, no sig mass, negative charge. Can be stopped by clothing. |
Gamma radiation | high energy waves, most dangerous. No mass or charge. |
Positron | a positive electrons. (magnetically flipped) |
Nuclear fission | splitting a large element (U or Pu) into smaller elements, releasing LOTS of energy. Used in nuclear reactors |
Nuclear fusion | combining 2 hydrogens to make helium. Requires super high temperatures to overcome nuclear repulsions. Occurs on the sun |
