Question | Answer |
Oxidation | LEO or OIL. Loss of electrons. Charge increases |
Reduction | GER or RIG. Gain of electrons. Charge decreases. |
Electrochemical cell | device that uses redox reactions to either produce or use electricity |
Electrolytic cell | not spontaneous. Needs a battery to force a reaction to occur. Could be electroplating or electrolysis of a compound. |
Voltaic cell | Chemicals spontaneously making electricity. Includes 2 beakers and a salt bridge for mov't of ions. |
Salt bridge | allows migration of IONS in a voltaic cell. |
Wire in electrochemical cell | allow movement of ELECTRONS in a voltaic cell. |
Table J | reactivity table. Metals that want to oxidize are at the TOP and can replace any metal below them. |
Anode | (an ox) metal piece where oxidation takes place. It is negative in the spontaneous set up and positive when there IS a battery. |
Cathode | (red cat) piece of metal where reduction takes place. It is positive in the spontaneous voltaic cell and negative in electrolytic (when there IS a battery) |
