Term | Definition |
Radioactivity | is the spontaneous decay of unstable nuclei with the release of one or more types of radiation. |
Alpha particle | are helium nuclei made up of two protons and two neutrons. |
Beta particle | is an electron with a negative charge and a greater ability to penetrate than alpha particle |
Gamma rays | are high energy electromagnetic radiation. They are not particles and are usually released in conjunction with either alpha or beta particles |
When atom losses alpha particles- | it changes into an atom of the element two places before it in the Periodic Table. the mass number of the parent atom decreases by four. |
When atom losses beta particles- | it changes into an atom of the element one place after it in the Periodic Table. The mass number of the atoms stay the same. |
Half-life of an element | is the time taken for half of the nuclei in any given sample to decay. |
Radioisotope | is an isotope of an element that emits radiation. |
Nuclear reactions | -elements can be changed (transmutation) -change occurs in the nucleus |
Chemical reactions | -cannot change one element to another -involves sharing and transfer of electrons. |
