Question/Term | Answer/Defintion |
Compound | Substance that is made up of two or more different elements combined together chemically |
Octet Rule | States that when bonding occurs, atoms tend to reach electron arrangement with eight electrons in the outermost shell. |
What elements are the exception to octet rule? | H-Hydrogen and He-Helium. These only require 2 electrons in the outermost shell as they only have one shell |
Ion | Charged atom or group of atoms |
Ionic bond | Is the force of attraction between oppositely charged ions in a compound |
Transition metal | Element that forms at least one ion with a partially filled d sublevel |
Name one a transition metal? | Sc-scandium, Ti-Titanium, V-Vanadium, Cr-Chromium, Mn- Manganese, Fe-Iron, Co-Cobalt, Ni-Nickel, Cu-Copper, Zn-Zinc |
Molecule | Group of atoms joined together. It is the smallest particle of an element or compound that can exist independently |
Sigma Bond | Covalent bond formed by the head-on overlap of the two atomic orbitals. |
Electronegativity | Relative attraction that an atom in a molecule has for the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond |
Electronegativity difference | Ionic bond is difference of greater than 1.7 Covalent bond is a difference less or equal than 1.7 |
Valency | of an element is defined as the number of atoms of hydrogen with which each atom of an element can combine |
Van der waals forces | are weak attractive forces between molecules resulting from the formation of temporary dipoles |
Dipole-Dipole forces | Forces of attraction between the negative pole of one molecule and the positive pole of another |
Hydrogen bond | Arises when and atom of hydrogen is bonded to a smal electronegative atom like nitrogen, oxygen or flourine |
Name one atom that hydrogen bonds with to form a hydrogen bond? | Oxygen, nitrogen or flourine |
