Chemistry | the study of matter- its compositions, properties, and transformations |
Matter | anything that has mass and takes up volume |
Naturally occuring matter | Cotton, sand, digoxin |
Synthetic matter | Nylon Ibuprofen |
Gas | Has no definite shape or volume Expands. to fill the volume and assumes the shape of whatever container it is put in. Has particles that are very far apart and move around randomly |
Liquid | Has definite volume. Takes the shape of its container. Has particles that are close together but can move past one another. |
Solid | Has definite volume. Maintains shape regardless of container. Has particles that Lie close together in a regular three dimensional array. |
Physical Properties | can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the material. Boiling point, melting point, density, solubility, color, odor. |
Chemical Properties | determine how a substance can be converted into another substance. |
Chemical change | The chemical reaction that converts one substance into another |
Density | Mass divided by volume. |
Extensive Properties | Depends on the amount of matter present. Example: Volume (balloon) Mass, Grain of sand, Mountain |
Intensive properties | are the same no matter the amount of matter present. |
Mixture | More than one component |
Heterogeneous | Nonuniform composition (pizza , concrete). |
Homogenous Mixture | Uniform composition. H2O |
Solution | Small particles |
Colloid | Large particles |
Pure Substances | One compound. Has a constant composition, regardless of sample size and origin of sample. |
Element | A pure substance that can't be broken down by a chemical change. |
Compounds | Pure substance formed by chemically joining two or more elements. |
