| endarterectomy | removal of the inner lining of the heart |
| atheroma | mass(collection) of fatty material in an artery |
| atherosclerosis | hardening of arteries due to yellowish plaque or fatty substance |
| atherectomy | removal of a fatty mass from a vessel |
| atrial | pertaining to atrium (pl. atria) |
| atrioventricular | pertaining to an atrium and vetricle |
| brachial artery | artery carrying blood to arm |
| cardiomegaly | enlargement of the heart |
| cardiomyopathy | disease condition of a heart muscle |
| bradycardia | slow heart rate |
| tachycardia | fast heart rate |
| cardiogenic shock | shock due to failure of heart in pumping action |
| hypercholesterolemia | excessive levels of cholesterol in the blood |
| coronary arteries | arteries that carry oxygen rich blood in the heart muscle |
| cyanosis | condition of bluish discoloration of the skin |
| myxoma | benign tumor of heart muscle |
| hypoxia | condition of decreased oxygen |
| pericardiocentesis | surgical puncture to remove fluid from the pericardium |
| phlebotomy | incision of a vein |
| thrombophlebitis | inflammation of a vein with clotting |
| arrythmia | abnormal heart rhythm |
| sphygmomanometer | instrument that measures blood pressure |
| stethoscope | instrument to examine the chest (hear sounds) |

| flutter | rapid but regular contractions |
| fibrillation | very rapid, random, irregular, inefficient contractions (treated with digoxin) |
| palpitation | uncomfortable sensations in the chest from missed heartbeats |
| aneurysm | widening (dilation) of arterial wall |
| congestive heart failure (CHF) | heart unable to pump required amount of blood (Systemic=right, pulmonary=left) |
| coronary artery disease (CAD) | disease of the arteries surrounding the heart (decreased ox. supply to heart)(result of atherosclerosis) |
| mitral valve prolapse (MVP) | improper closure of mitral valve |
| murmur | extra heart sound, heard between normal beats |
| bruit | abnormal sound or murmur |
| thrill | vibration felt on palpation of the chest |
| hypertension (HTN) | high blood pressure |
| intermittent claudication | absense of pain while at rest but pain and tension after walking |
| vericose veins | swollen twisted veins usually in legs |
| lipid test (lipid profile) | measurement of cholesterol and triglycerides in a blood sample |
| doppler ultrasound | sound waves measure blood flow w/in blood vessels |
| echocardiography(ECHO) | echos generated by high-frequency sound waves produce images of the heart |
| electrocardiography (ECG) | recording of electricity through the heart |
| holter monitoring | an ECG device worn during 24-hr period to detect cardiac arrythmias |
| coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) | arteries and veins are anastomosed to coronary arteries to detour around blockages (treatment for CAD) |
| defribillation | discharges of electricity are applied across chest to stop dysrrythmia |
| cardioversion | another technique to treat fibrillation but with lower energy |
| thrombolytic therapy | drugs to dissolve clots |
| PVC | premature ventricular contraction |
