equation | A number sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two expressions have the same value Example: 9 + 3 = 12 |
Addition Property of Equality | The same number can be added to both sides of an equation and the sides remain equal. |
Subtraction Property of Equality | The same number can be subtracted from both sides of an equation and the sides remain equal. |
inverse operations | Operations that undo each other. Example: Adding 6 and subtracting 6 are inverse operations. |
Multiplication Property of Equality | Both sides of an equation can be multiplied by the same nonzero number and the sides remain equal. |
Division Property of Equality | Both sides of an equation can be divided by the same nonzero number and the sides remain equal. |
inequality | A mathematical sentence that contains one of the symbols >, <, ≥, or ≤. |
solution of an inequality | Any number that makes an inequality true. |
