Term | Definition |
magnet | material that attracts iron |
magnetic pole | one of two points such as the ends of a magnet that have opposite magnetic properties |
magnetic force | the force of attraction or repulsion created by moving or spinning electric charges |
atoms | a very small building blocks of matter |
domains | small sections of atoms that are lined up to make a magnetic field |
ferromagnets | magnets made or iron, cobalt, and nickel |
temporary magnets | easy to magnetize, but doesn't stay magnetized for long |
permanent magnets | difficult to magnetize, but remain magnetized for longer amounts of time |
Earth's core | the area of the earth with moving iron that creates our magnetic field...not every planet has this |
aurora | a curtain of lights which result from solar wind burning up in the atmosphere at the poles |
electromagnetism | interaction of electricity and magnetism |
solenoid | a coil of wire with an electric current running through it...creates a magnetic field |
electromagnet | a solenoid with a iron core...strong magnetic field |
electric motor | changes electrical energy to mechanical energy (it can do work) |
electric generator | changes mechanical energy (work of machines) to electrical energy |
electromagnetic induction | creating electrical current by moving a magnetic field past a coil of wires |
Hans Christian Oersted | (1820) discovered that moving charges (electricity) can create magnetic fields |
how to strengthen electromagnets | More loops of wire - More electricity - More metal in the core of the solonoid |
types of turbines | wind - water - geothermal - nuclear ----- all of them turn to generate electricity by passing magnets by wires to move electrons |
north geographic pole ("top" of the Earth) | south magnetic pole |
Michael Faraday | (1831) discovered that changing magnetic fields (moving magnets) make electrons flow in wires (electricity) |
types of magnets | ferromagnets, electromagnets, permanent, temporary |
how to "mess up" a magnet | store it with other magnets in a disorderly way - extreme heat - dropping it - hitting it |
how to create a magnet | rub a magnet against the iron, nickel, or cobalt to line up the atoms into organized domains....get the atoms to line up |
electrons | particles in the outside area of the atom.....when they move and go from atom to atom we call it "electricity" |
