Term | Definition |
multiplication | An operation that gives the total number when you join equal groups. Example: 2 x 4 = 8 |
factors | Numbers that are multiplied to give a product. For example in 3 x 8 = 24, 3 and 8 are factors. |
product | The answer to a multiplication problem. Example: In 3 X 8 = 24, 24 is the product. |
array | A way of displaying objects in equal rows. |
Commutative (Order) Property of Multiplication | Numbers can be multiplied in any order and the product will be the same. Example: 4 x 3 = 3 x 4 |
multiples | the products of a whole number and other whole numbers. Example: 5, 10, 15, 20 are some multiples of 5. |
Identity (One) Property of Multiplication | The product of any number and 1 is that number. Example: 8 X 1 = 8 |
Zero Property of Multiplication | The product of any number and zero is zero. Example: 4 x 0 = 0 |
Distributive Property | A multiplication fact can be broken apart into the sum of two other multiplication facts. Example: 5 x 4 = (2 x 4) + (3 x 4) |
Associative (Grouping) Property of Multiplication | The grouping of factors can be changed and the product will be the same. |
