Condensation | the process by which a gas changes to a liquid |
evaporation | the process by which a liquid changes to a gas |
melting | when a solid changes into a liquid |
freezing | when a liquid changes into a solid |
enthalpy | the total energy content of a system (energy) |
entropy | a measure of the randomness or disorder of a system |
specific heat capacity | the amount of heat energy required to raise the tempurature of 1g of a substance by 1 K |
thermodynamics | energy changes that accompany physical and chemical processes |
endothermic | when something is absorbing heat |
exothermic | when heat is leaving something, or when heat is being given off by something |
Gibbs energy | a thermodynamic property incorporating both enthalpy and and entropy |
Calorimeter | a device used to measure the heat absorbed or released in a chemical or physical change |
Hess's Law | the overall enthalpy change in a reaction equal to the sum of the enthalpy changes of the individual steps of the process |
Standard enthalpy of formation | the amount of heat released ot absorbed when i mol of compound is made from its elements under standard conditions |
Gibbs energy | a thermodynamic property incorporating both enthalpy and entropy |
intensive property | a property that does not deoend on the amount of material present |
extensive property | a property that depends on the amound of material present |
Sublime | going directly from a solid to a gas |
heat (enthalpy) of fusion | the heat absorbed by a solid to get it to a liquid. (to its melting point) |
enthalpy of vaporization | the amount of heat it takes to get a liquid to a gas |
calorimetry | the act of measuring the heat of something or making such measurements |
spontaneous | occuring without added energy |
