Term | Definition |
Quadratic Function | A function of the form y = ax^2 + bx + c, where a ≠ 0. The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola, a U-shaped curve that opens up or down. |
Standard Form of a Quadratic Function | The form of a quadratic function written y = ax^2 + bx + c, where a ≠ 0. |
Parabola | The graph of a quadratic function |
Axis of Symmetry | The line that divides a parabola into two matching halves. |
Vertex | The highest or lowest point on a parabola. The axis of symmetry intersects the parabola at the vertex. |
Minimum | The y-coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that opens upward. |
Maximum | The y-coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that opens downward. |
Quadratic Parent Function | y=x^2 |
Quadratic Equation or Standard Form of a Quadratic Equation | an equation that can be written in the form of ax^2+bx+c=0, where a cannot be 0. |
Roots or Zeros of an Equation | the solutions and the x-intercepts of a quadratic equation |
Zero Product Property | For any real numbers "a" and "b", if "ab=0", then "a=0" or "b=0". |
Completing the Square | The process off dividing "b" by two and squaring it, then adding it to both sides of an equation in order to solve for the roots of a quadratic function. |
