TERM | DEFINITION | EXAMPLE |
DISTANCE | A count of the number of units from one point to another. | The distance from 3 to 9 is 6, because there are 6 spaces between 3 and 9. |
ABSOLUTE VALUE | The distance of a number from 0. Symbol: double vertical bars (|x|) | |-3| = 3, because -3 is 3 spaces away from 0. |
LIKE TERMS | Terms that contain the same variables, with the corresponding variables having the same power. | 4x and 5x are like terms; 4x and 5x^2 are unlike terms |
QUOTIENT | The result of dividing one real number by another real number. | 6/2 = 3; 3 is the quotient |
SQUARE ROOT | A number that when multiplied by itself will produce the given number. | The square root of 36 is 6, because 6 * 6 = 36. |
PERFECT SQUARE | Any number that produces a whole number for its square root. | 16 is a perfect square, because the square root of 16 is 4 and 4 is a whole number. |
NONNEGATIVE NUMBER | Any number that is positive or equal to 0. | 6, 3.47, 0, 912.85 |
