Question | Answer |
force | a push or pull on an object |
motion | change in position measured by distance and time |
speed | the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time (distance over time) |
velocity | how fast (speed) and how far (direction) |
acceleration | change in velocity; tells us the rate speed or direction changes |
momentum | measurement of the amount of force it would take to stop an object's motion (usually forward; mass (kg) x velocity (m/s); unit is kg*m/s |
direction | "the way" an object is headed |
mass | how much matter is in an object |
gravity | a force that pulls objects towards earth's center |
inertia | the tendency of motionless objects to remain motionless and moving objects to remain in motion |
Newton's 1st Law | law of inertia; an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon; an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon |
Newton's 2nd Law | force = mass x acceleration |
Newton's 3rd Law | for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction |
friction | force from two objects rubbing against each other; resistance to move |
weight | gravity's pull on an object |
balanced force | do not cause a change in motion; equal in size and opposite in direction |
unbalanced force | always cause a change in motion; forces are not equal and opposite |
net force | overall force on an object |
