| What are factors? | Two numbers or more numbers that are multiplied together to get a product of a certain number. |
| What is the order of operations? | P= Perentheses E= Exponents M= Multiplication D= Division A= Addition S= Subtraction |
| What is an exponent? | An exponent is a small number next to a regular number that tells you how many times to multiply the number by itself. |
| What is a base in math? | The number that is used as a factor in repeated multiplication. |
| What is a power? | A power shows you how many times to use the number in multiplication. Ex: 4^2= 4x4=16 |
| (-3)^2 means? | 3x3=9. Since the -3 is in parentheses the product is positive. |
| -3^2 | -3x-3= -9. Since the -3 isn't in parenthesis the product is negative. |
| Prime Numbers are? | A prime number is when only 1 and itself goes into a number. |
| What are composite numbers? | An integer that is divisible without remainder by at least one positive integer other than itself and one. |
| What is GCF? | GCF is the highest number that will go into 2 or more numbers evenly. |
| What is GCF with variables? | First you find the GCF if there are numbers involved, then you take the lowest exponent. Like if you had x^2 and x^4m you would take x^2 and put it next to your GCF. |
| What is prime factorization? | It's when you make a factor tree and break down the numbers until you get to a prime number, like 2. |
| How do you solve prime factorization with GCF. | You would do the same as regular prime factorization, breaking it down, until it gets to a prime number. Then if you have something like x^2 AND X^4 you would take the GCF, x^2 and place it next to your answer. |
| How to simplify expressions? | If you have a whole number you would find the GCF for the whole numbers. Then, x^2 on the top and x^3 on top, you would cross out the GCF, x^2, so then you have to take of 2 from 3 which is just x. You would do that with all the exponents. |
| What are rational numbers and give some examples. | Rational Numbers are any integers or a fraction. Ex: 1/4, 3/4, and 7/8. |
| How do you write a negative rational number? | Let's say you have -7, you would write -7 over 1: -7 -- 1 |
| What is the multiplying exponent rule? | If you have x^3 and x^2, you would do x^2+^3=5, so it would be x^5. You add the exponents of the same variable: x,y,z. |
| What is a power of a power? | If you have: (x^2)^2, you would write that as: x^2•x^2. Or you could just multiply the exponents inside the parentheses with the exponents outside of the parentheses. |
| What is the zero exponent rule? | When you have any number to the 0 power, the answer is automatically 1. Ex: 5^0=1. 64^0=1. |
| What is the negative exponent rule? | If you have x^-8 you would write it as 1 over x^8. So you would have 1 on top and the negative exponent becomes positive: 1 -- x^8 |
| How do you write a fraction bar without negative exponents. | If you have a negative exponent on the top, the exponent would become positive and go to the bottom of the fraction bar. | How do you rewrite without a fraction bar? | If you have an exponent on the top, you just write it the same way off to the side. On the bottom you would change the positive exponents to a negative exponent. |
| How do you rewrite without zero or negative exponents? | If the exponent is zero, you take it out of the equation. If it is negative you change it to a positive exponent and move it to the opposite side of the fraction bar. When you get your answer and you have like terms, you add the exponents together. |
