Question | Answer |
Electronegativity | The ability oif an atom to attract electrons in a covalent bond. Dependent upon: charge on nucleus, distance of outer shell electrons form the nucleus, and amount of shielding from inner shell electrons. |
Pauling Scale | Cesium is lowest at 0.7 and Flourine is highest at 4.0 (Nobel Gases are exempt) |
Non-polar Covalent Bond | A bond in which the electrons are attracted equally by two atoms, both atoms have the same electronegativity. |
Polar Covalent Bond | A bond in which the electrons are attracted mopre strongly by one atom than the other. Sets up an uneven charge distribution in the bond, atoms have different electronegattivities. |
Dipole | A molecule that is electrically unsymmetrical causing it to be oppositely charged at two points. Only applies to covalently bonded atoms. |
Polar Molecule | A molecule is said to be polar if its centers of negative and positive charge do not coincide. |
A covalent bond between two atoms of different electronegativity is . . . | always polar. |
A covalent bond between two atoms of identical electronegativity is always . . . | non-polar. |
A molecule is non-polar if . . . | the sum of the vectors representing bond polarity is zero. |
A molecule is polare if . . . | the sum of the vectors representing bond polarity is not zero. |
