Question | Answer |
Law of Conservation of Mass | the mass of substances produced (products)by a chemical reaction is always equal to the mass of the reacting sudstances (reactants) |
Phisical Change | A change from one state (solid, liquid, or gas) to another without changing chrmical composition |
Chamical Change | any process determined by the atomic and moleculer composition and structure of the substances involved |
Element | a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number |
Chemical Formula | a representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements |
Element (Diatomic) Molecule | Diatomic molecules are molecules composed only of two atoms, of either the same or different chemical elements |
Chemical Equation | A symbolic representation of what happens when chemicals come in contact with one another |
Chemical Reaction | 1.A process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction |
Reactants (in a chemical equation) | Substances initially present in a chemical reaction that are consumed during the reaction to make products |
Products (in a chemical equation) | The compounds that are formed when a reaction goes to completion. |
Coefficient (in a chemical equation) | A coefficient is a number placed in front of a term in a chemical equation to indicate how many molecules (or atoms) take part in the reaction |
Subscript (in a chemical equation) | the number of atoms of that kind there are in one molecule |
Ionic compound | An ionic compound is a compound formed by ions bonding together through electrostatic forces |
Covalent Compound | A covalent bond is a form of chemical bonding that is characterized by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms, and other covalent bonds |
Metallic Compound | A metallic compound is a compound that contains one or more metal elements. |
Synthesis | 2.The combination of ideas to form a theory or system. |
Decomposition | Conversion or decay of degradable (or chemically unstable) material to simpler (or more stable) components or forms by the natural action of air, water, light, or microorganisms |
Single Replacement | is a type of oxidation-reduction chemical reaction when an element or ion moves out of one compound and into another. (One element is replaced by another in a compound. |
Double Replacement | a chemical reaction between two compounds where the positive ion of one compound is exchanged with the positive ion of another compound |
