|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Officer of the deck OOD | In-charge of the Bridge. Reports directly to the
Commanding Officer for the safe navigation and general operation of the ship; to the Executive Officer for carrying out the ship’s routine; and to the Navigator on sighting navigational landmarks
🗑
| Junior officer of the deck JOOD | An
OOD under instruction. The JOOD is
the principal assistant to the OOD.
🗑
| Conning officer | Responsible for the safe navigation of the ship. Issues rudder
and engine commands to the Helmsman and Lee Helmsman to maneuver the ship.
🗑
| Quarter master of the watch QMOW | Maintains the navigational picture for the
OOD. Acts as the Navigator’s representative when the Navigator is not on the
Bridge.
🗑
| Boatswains mate of the watch BMOW | Enlisted assistant to the OOD for carrying out the ship’s routine (Plan of the Day) and passage of word throughout the ship. Also responsible for the watch routine (rotation of enlisted watchstanders)
🗑
| Helmsman | Executes the rudder orders issued by the Conn.
🗑
| Lee Helmsman | Executes the engine orders issued by the Conn.
🗑
| Lookouts | Assists the OOD in maintaining 360 degrees of situational awareness while
underway.
🗑
| Azimuth | Used to take bearing to
objects. Normally located in the pilot house on
the centerline pelorus.
🗑
| Telescopic Alidade | Used to take bearing to
objects. Normally located on the bridge wings.
🗑
| Barometer | Measures atmospheric pressure.
🗑
| Voyage Management System VMS | Electronic chart primarily used by the OOD
and QMOW to ensure the ship is in safe water.
Can also be utilized to plan routes to locations
🗑
| Radar | Distance is obtained by a radio wave that is transmitted into the air and returns as an
echo. Time interval between transmission and return is converted into a range.
🗑
| Laser Rangefinder | Same concept as radar but with a laser pulse of light traveling at 186,000
miles/second. Great for short distance calculations (ex. Two ships alongside one another for
UNREP).
🗑
| Sextant | Similar to the stadimeter, distance can be ascertained from an object of known height
through trigonometric calculations or using conversion tables in.
🗑
| Fathometer | Uses SONAR to measure the depth of water from the keel of the ship to the ocean
floor. Determines whether the ship is in safe water to operate.
🗑
| Tactical Action Officer TAO | TAO is the senior watchstander in the CIC, and is the
Commanding Officer’s direct representative in the employment of the ship’s
weapons system.
🗑

the CIC. They make sure that all contacts – surface, subsurface, and air – are
reported.
🗑
| Radar Nav Team | Act as back-up plot to the QMOW or Piloting Team.
Navigation team in CIC also has various RADAR and VMS consoles/nodes. This
allows CIC to come up with independent solutions for contact management as well
as staying on course. Reports to the CICWO.
🗑
| Combat Coordinators | Assist the TAO in maintaining tactical situational awareness
while running the various weapons and radar systems.
Surface Warfare Coordinator (SUWC)
Anti-Air Warfare Coordinator (AAWC)
Anti-Submarine Warfare Coordinator (ASWC)
🗑
| Engineering Officer of the watch | In-charge of the operations of the
engineering plant when underway. Reports directly to the Chief Engineer for
the safe operation of the ship’s engineering systems. Reports directly to the
Officer of the Deck for plant status and casualties
🗑
| Propulsion and Auxiliaries Control Console Operator | Reports to EOOW
and operates and monitors equipment remotely from the Central Control
Station (CCS)
🗑
| Electrical Plant Control Console Operator | Reports to EOOW and operates
and monitors equipment remotely from CCS
🗑
| Equipment Monitors | Various positions within the engineering plant to oversee
the multiple of systems within the ship. Only report to the EOOW.
🗑
| Repair Lockers | Vital equipment for damage control
🗑
| stadimeter | A stadimeter is an optical device for estimating the range to an object of known height
