---|---|---|---|---|---|
Alkaline | The measure of a basic substance in water. Any substance registering over 7 on the pH scale
🗑
Anaerobic | A term used to describe an organism or process that does not require O2.
🗑
Anions | Negatively charged ions such as bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) or limestone (calcium carbonate)
🗑
Beers Law | The higher a concentration of a substance, the darker the color produced on the test strip (colormetric tests are based on this)
🗑
Buffers | These substances, when added to water, do not allow rapid changes in pH. An example of a buffer is bicarbonate of soda. Buffering capacity is expressed as alkalinity.
🗑
Cations | A positively charge ion.
🗑
Colorimetric | A colorimetric test determines the quantity of a substance by the measurement of the intensity of light transmitted by the solution of a substance
🗑
Conductance | The ability of a substance to allow the passage of electrical current. Used to measure Total Dissolved Solids.
🗑
Effluent | A term used to describe water discharge from a rearing facility, treatment plant or an industry.
🗑
Grams Per Liter | Large concentrations of substances in solution can be recorded as this or as Parts per Thousand
🗑
Heat Capacity | The ability of a substance to resist changes in temperature
🗑
Heavy Metals | Mercury, Lead and Chromium are examples of these. They can bioaccumulate in organisms and can cause human health problems.
🗑
Hydroponics | Growing plants without soil, using a nutrient solution.
🗑
Ions | Electrically charged atoms, radicals or molecules.
🗑
Logarithmic | A mathematical scale where each step is 10 times the step before. It is used to express pH.
🗑
Part per billion | Equal to 1 microgram per kg or 1 microgram per L. A concentration at which 1 part is contained in a total of 1 billion units.
🗑
Part per million | A concentration that is also expressed as 1 mg/L. It is the most common unit to measure substances' concentration in water.
🗑
Part per thousand | Equivalent to 1 g/L or 1 unit out of one thousand units.
🗑
Salinity | The concentration of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate, carbonate, sulfate, chloride, fluoride, bromide in water.
🗑
Acid - Base | Substances that have a non-nuetral pH. Strong forms of either can cause severe burns
🗑
Water Hardness | A measurement of the total concentration of calcium and magnesium
🗑
Wastewater | Water that has been used in a manufacturing, processing, or production facility.
🗑
Turbidity | Presence of suspended or colloidal material that reduces light penetration
🗑
Titrimetric | Describes a test that uses a titrant added to a known or specific volume of sample in the presence of an indicator.
🗑
Solubility | The degree to which a substance can be dissolved in a liquid.
