Who was Justinian?   Powerful emperor of Byzantine Empire 527-565.

How did Justinian make Constantinople a strong and beautiful capital?   He built high walls to protect it, and lined the main street with shops.

What were the two biggest problems the empire faced?   The plague broke out and killed thousands of people for years, weakening the empire. They also had to confront many enemies over the centuries.

What was the effect of the split between the Eatsern Church and Roman Church?   Missionaries traveled north of the Byzantine Empire. Two missionaries formed an alphabet for Slavic languages, which are now written in the Cyrillic alphabet.

What was the Hagia Sophia?   A church that had been destroyed by mobs in riots against the emperor. Justinian rebuilt it to be beautiful, all gold and still standing today.

What ties linked Kiev to Byzantium?   Trade by easy river and sea routes; religion after 989.

How did Vladimir & Yaroslav contribute to the power of Kiev?   Expanded the state west to Poland and North to almost Baltic Sea. Yaroslav married off his daughters and sisters to royalty in western Europe to make trading alliances. Created legal code tailored to Kiev's commercial culture. Built library and churches.

What factors led to the decline of Kiev?   Yaroslav divided his realm amoung sons, they tore the state apart fighting for land. System of dividing continued through several generations. Crusades disrupted trade. Mongols attacked and destroyed Kiev.

How did the Mongols treat the Russian people?   Tolerated all religions; allowed Russia to follow usual customs; demanded obedience and big tribute from all principalities.

What were some effects of Mongol rule of Russia?   Isolated Russia from western Europe; encouraged rise of Moscow; encouraged guidance and control of Byzantine Church.

What events marked the beginning of an independent Russian Empire?   Czar Ivan III refused to pay tribute to Mongols; Russian & Mongol armies had bloodless standoff.
