Definition
Periodic Table   Arranges all of the known elements in order of increasing atomic number(# of protons). Order generally coincides with increasing atomic mass too.

Metal   Solid at room temperature, shiny luster, ductile(bendable), malleable(hammered with out shattering), good conductors of heat and electricity, high density, high melting points,re activity bottom left are the most atractive

Non-metals   No luster(dull appearance), poor conductors, brittle(break easily), not ductile(bendable), Not malleable(hammered without shattering), low density, low melting point, less reactive than metals

Metalloids   Elements on both sides of the zigzag line have properties of both metals and non metals

Periods   The periods are the rows on the periodic table #1-7, The atomic number increases as you go left to right, those in the same period have the same number of levels and shells, chemical properties are not all similar.

Groups   The groups or families on the periodic table are the columns that are left to right #1-18, same number of valence electrons, chemical properties are very similar, Group 1 is the most reactive and group 18 is the least

Reactivity   The ability to combine or separate with other atoms to create new substances, valence electrons are the key to this process, re activity changes across the periodic table.

Happy stable atom   Having its outer most energy level filled with electrons, These atoms do not want to bond with others atoms, Helium is the exemption because it is happy with only two valence electrons

Alkali Metals   Highly reactive.They are so reactive they are never found uncombined in nature, metals soft enough you can cut them with a butter knife

Alkaline Earth metals   Fairly reactive, not as reactive as alkali metals but still never found uncombined in nature, serves as important minerals in our body

Transition Metals   Less reactive metals, hard and dense metals that are useful as building materials such as jewelry and coins

Noble gases   Un re active gases
