Definition
Poly-atomic ion
🗑
Nomenclature   the devising or choosing of names for things, especially in a science or other discipline.
🗑
Octet Rule   a chemical rule of thumb that reflects observation that atoms of main-group elements tend to combine in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas.
🗑
Ionic Bond   the complete transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms. It is a type of chemical bond that generates two oppositely charged ions. In ionic bonds, the metal loses electrons to become a positively charged cation.
🗑
Stock System   a widely used system of chemical nomenclature developed by the German chemist Alfred Stock and first published in 1919.
🗑
Oxidation Number   The oxidation number of simple ions is equal to the charge on the ion.
🗑
Covalent Bond   a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
🗑
Metallic Bond   the force of attraction between valence electrons and the metal ions.
🗑
Polar Covalent   The greater the electronegativity difference, the more ionic the bond is.
🗑
Non-polar Covalent   a type of chemical bond where two atoms share a pair of electrons with each other.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
