| Independent Variable | Variable for which different values can be chosen. Its value is not dependent on the value of another variable.
Usually represented by "x". Always graphed on x-axis (horizontal).

| Dependent Variable | Variable whose value depends on the value chosen for the independent variable. Usually represented by "y". Always graphed on the y-axis (vertical)

| Constant Rate of Change | Amount that the independent variable changes each time the value of the dependent variable increases by 1. We referred to this as the "unit rate" during our last unit. We call this the SLOPE when we are describing a linear equation.

| Y-Intercept | The value of the dependent variable (y) when the independent variable (x) is 0. This is the point where the line crosses the y-axis. This is the value of y before any activity associated with x begins, like a start-up cost, set-up cost, membership fee, head start or beginning balance.

| Linear Relationship | Set of data where the dependent variable changes at a constant rate each time the value of the independent variable is increased by 1. On a graph, this is a straight line.

| Proportional Relationship | A linear relationship where the y-intercept is 0 so the line passes through the origin (0,0)

| Slope Intercept Form | The proper way of writing an equation for a linear relationship:
y = mx + b where:
y is the dependent variable, m is the constant rate of change (slope),
x is the independent variable, and b is the y-intercept.

| Scale | How many units apart you choose to make the grid-lines for the X and Y axes. Pick a value that uses as much of the graph area as possible and can show as much of the data you have as possible.

| Cartesian Coordinate Plane | A grid of evenly spaced grid-lines running both vertically and horizontally that is used to graph equations. The vertical y-axis crosses the horizontal x-axis in the center of the grid which is called the origin and is always at point (0,0). The plane and the axes go on infinitely.

| Ordered Pair | An x and y value that represent a specific location on the coordinate plane. The x value is always first, the y value second.

| Coefficient | The number in front of a variable. For example, the 3 in 3X. This constant is multiplied by the value of the variable when solving problems.
