mixture   two or more different types of matter that are physical combined, NOT chemically combined, so each type of matter in the mixture retains it own individual properties
🗑
heterogeneous mixture   the matter in the mixture is not distributed evenly throughout (ex. salad dressing, chocolate chip cookies, and air)
🗑
homogeneous mixture   the matter in the mixture is the same throughout (uniformly mixed); (ex. salt water, toothpaste)
🗑
solution   a homogeneous mixture; the most common are solids dissolved in liquids but other states of matter also form solutions
🗑
magnetism   removes particles that are magnetic (ex. how steel and aluminum are separated for recycling)
🗑
filtration   separates a solid from a liquid by pouring through a filter (ex. how coffee is made)
🗑
evaporation   will separate a solid from the water that the solid is dissolve in; water evaporates and leaves the solid behind usually in the form of crystals; the solvent is lost in the process

solute   the substance that dissolves to form a solution
