What are Context Clues?   Words and Phrases in a sentence which help you reason out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. Oftentimes you can figure out the meanings of new or unfamiliar vocabulary by paying attention to the surrounding language.

What are the different types of Context Clues?   -definition or example, synonym or restatement, antonym or opposite, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, example, and general knowledge clues

What are Definition or Synonym Clues? Hint: Most often found in textbooks such as science, history and mathematics.   The unknown word is followed by a comma or dash and a synonym or definition. Additional clues can include words such as "or", "is called", "that is", and "in other words".

What are Concrete Examples?   the unknown word is followed by an example that illustrates and clarifies a difficult concept. Signal words: "such as", "including", "for instance", "to illustrate,'are examples of",and "for example'

What are Contrasting or Antonym Clues?   an opposite meaning of the vocabulary word is provided. The clue often requires students to catch and understand the signal word. The contrast/antonym clue often appears in the same or subsequent sentence.

What are Description Clues?   this content clue describes what a word means and provides word meaning upon further reading.

What are Words and Phrases that Modify?   Modifiers-such as adjectives , adverbs, or phrases and clauses can often provide clues to the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

What effect does making an Inference upon reading an unknown word have?   Assists the reader with identifying the meaning of the unknown word.

What are Conjunctions showing Relationships? Hint: Allows reader to link unfamiliar words to familiar ones   the context clue begins with a conjunction to show the relationship between words. Coordinating conjunctions include 'since", "because', 'even though", "if", 'just as", 'when", "whenever", "until", and "although"

What are Unstated or Implied Meanings/Gist Clues? Hint: The most subtle clue. Reader must read entire passage.   the reader is required to draw on personal experience of similar situations and make an inference to identify unknown word. the unknown word WILL NOT be defined or restated and no antonym will be offered
