|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| one atom | The smallest unit of an element that has all the properties of that element. Basic building block of matter.
🗑
| molecule | A group of any atoms bonded together; the smallest unit of a compound.
🗑
| physical properties | A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance.
🗑
| chemical properties | The characteristic ability of a substance to react to form new substances, including flammability and the ability to be corroded.
🗑
| pure substance | A single substance, made of only one type of atom or molecule.
🗑
| mixture | A material composed of two or more simpler substances in chemistry. The individual substances keep their properties, like carrots in a salad.
🗑
| element | Any substance that cannot be decomposed (broken down) into simpler substances by ordinary physical or chemical processes.
🗑
| heterogenous | A mixture where throughout the solution the composition is not uniform. You can point to the different parts of the mixture.
🗑
| homogenous | A mixture whose composition is uniform throughout the mixture. It all looks the same so you cannot point to the different parts.
🗑
| solution | What occurs when two chemicals are mixed, referred to as a solvent and a solute, and one is dissolved into the other.
🗑
| suspension | A heterogeneous mixture in which the solute particles do not dissolve but get suspended throughout the mixture.
🗑
| colloid | A special mixture consisting of particles dispersed in solution. Unlike the other two primary types of mixture, solutions and suspensions, colloids contain particles that stay evenly distributed.
🗑
| hetero- | A prefix that means "different."
🗑
| homo- | A prefix that means "same."
🗑
| compound | A group of different atoms bonded together.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
