Rules for assigning Oxidation Numbers

Quiz yourself by thinking what should be in each of the black spaces below before clicking on it to display the answer.
        Help!

Question
Answer
Elements?   Oxidation number is zero
🗑
Monotomic ions? Like Fe-   charge on the ion
🗑
Oxygen?   -2 in most compounds
🗑
Hydrogen?   +1 in most compounds. Oxidation number of hydrogen is -1 in a binary compound with a metal such as CaH2.
🗑
Halogens?   The oxydation number for flourine in all of its compounds is -1. All other Halogens have an oxidation number of -1 in binary compounds, excpet when the other element is another Halogen above it or oxygen.
🗑
Compounds and ions?   The sum of the oxidation # of the atoms in a compound equals zero. In polyatiomic ion the sume of the oxidation numbers equals the charge of the ion.
🗑
What rule allows you to see if your correct?   The rule for Compounds and ions.
🗑
Define what it means when something has been oxidized?   The oxidation # goes up.
🗑
What does it mean when something has been reduced?   the oxidation # goes down.
🗑
An oxidizing agent is...   something that oxidizes something else, and in doing so its oxidation number goes down.
🗑
A reducing agent is   something that reduces something else, and in doing something it gets oxidized.
