Term | Definition |
Absolute Value | A term used to describe the distance between a number and zero. |
Additive Inverse Property | The property that states that a number and its opposite have a sum of zero. |
Associative Property | The property that states that you can change the grouping of numbers being added or multiplied without changing the results |
Commutative Property | The property that states you can change the order of numbers being added or multiplied without changing the result. |
Decimals | Numbers that represent part of a whole and use the base ten system. |
Fractions | Numbers that represent part of a whole and consist of a numerator and denominator. |
Identity Property of Addition | The property that states that the sum of a number and zero will be equal to that number. |
Integers | All positive and negative whole numbers and zero. |
Negative Integers | All whole numbers that are less than zero. |
Opposites | Two numbers that are on different sides of zero, but are the same distance away from zero. Also called additive inverses. |
Positive Integers | All whole numbers greater than zero. |
Rational Numbers | Any number that can be written as a fraction, where numerator and denominator are both integers and denominator does not equal zero. Also any number that can be written as a terminating or repeating decimal. |
Complex Fraction | A fraction that is composed of a rational number or expression in the numerator and/or denominator. |
Dividend | The term used to describe the value in a division problem that is being divided; also identifies the numerator of a fraction. |
Divisor | The term used to describe the value in which another number is to be divided; also identifies the denominator of a fraction. |
Factor | The term used to describe the values in a multiplication problem that are being multiplied together. |
Identity Property of Multiplication | The property that states that a number times one is equal to that number. |
Inverse Property of Multiplication | The property that states that a number times its reciprocal is equal to one. |
Order of Operations | A universal set of rules that are used and followed when an expression consists of more than one operation. |
Product | The term used to describe the answer to a multiplication problem. |
Quotient | The term used to describe the answer to a division problem. |
Reciprocal | The multiplicative inverse of a number; also the "flip" of a fraction where the numerator and denominator "switch positions". |
Zero Product Property | The property that states that any number times zero is equal to zero. |
