Question | Answer |
Real Number | A number that is rational or irrational, not imaginary. |
Rational Number | A number capable of being expressed as an integer or a quotient of integers, excluding zero as a denominator. |
Irrational Number | Any number that cannot be expressed as the ratio of two natural numbers, Pi and the square root of 2 being familiar examples. |
Decimal | A linear array of digits that represents a real number, every decimal place indicating a multiple of a negative power of 10. |
Repeating Decimal | A decimal in which a pattern of one or more digits is repeated indefinitely. |
Terminating Decimal | A decimal that has only a finite number of nonzero digits to the right of the decimal point. |
Greatest Common Factor/Greatest Common Divisor | The largest integer that divides without a remainder into a set of integers. |
Least Common Multiple | The smallest quantity that is divisible by two or more given quantities without a remainder. |
Rounding | Expressed or designated as a whole number or integer; not fractional. |
Truncate | To shorten (a number)by dropping one or more digits after the decimal point. |
Expanded Notation/Scientific Notation | The representation of a number as the sum of a series of terms, each of which is written explicity as the product of a digit and the base of the number system raised to some power. a/k/a scientific notation. |
Exponential Form | Can be seen just as a way to write expressions like 8x8x8 in a more compact form. 8^3 is the exponential form. |
Percent | a ratio comparison of two quantities expressed by using 100 equal parts or hundredths; symbolized %. There are three major uses of percent; part of a whole, rate, and comparison of any two quantities. |
