Term | Definition |
Gas | A fluid form of matter that fills the container it occupies. |
Liquid | A fluid form of matter that has a well defined surface and will occupy the lowest part of a container. |
Solid | A form of matter that remains independent in shape despite the container its held in, it's particles are tightly packed together. |
Atoms | The building blocks of all substances. It is the defining structure of an element and cannot be broken down by chemical means. |
Elements | Made up of only one type of atom. |
Compounds | Consist of two or more types of elements(atoms) that are chemically joined together, the result of a chemical reaction. |
Mixture | Consists of two or more substances mixed together but are not chemically bonded, can be easily separated. |
Diatomic | Made of two or more atoms chemically bonded together. |
Homogeneous Mixture | Mixture where all the components are uniformly distributed throughout, the composition of the mixture is the same throughout. |
Heterogeneous Mixture | Mixture where the components are not uniformly distributed, two samples of this mixture will not be identical. |
Dissolving | When a substance is broken up or absorbed by another substance. |
Solution | A substance where a solute has dissolved into a solvent. |
Solvent | Liquid in which a solute dissolves. |
Solute | Substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution. |
Soluble | Describes a substance that will dissolve. |
Insoluble | Describes a substance that will not dissolve. |
Phase | A physical distinctive form of matter (gas, solid, liquid) |
Phase Change | A change in the form of matter e.g. when a substance goes from solid phase to liquid phase. |
Melting | The process by which a substance changes from a solid phase to a liquid phase. |
Condensation | The process by which a substance changes from a gas phase to a liquid phase. |
Vapourization | The process by which a substance changes from a liquid phase to a gas phase. |
Sublimation | The process by which a substance changes from a solid phase to a gas phase. |
Deposition | The process by which a substance changes from a gas phase to a solid phase. |
Freezing Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid |
