Term | Definition |
Gas | is a fluid form of matter (meaning it moves) that fills the container it occupies |
Liquid | is a fluid form of matter that possesses a well defined surface and (in a gravitational field) fills the lower part of the container it occupies |
Solid | retains its shape independent of the shape of the container it occupies |
Atoms | atoms are the building blocks of all substances. |
Element | An element is made up of one type of atom. It is the simplest type of substance. |
Diatomics | Two ATOMS of the same element. They are ELEMENTS CHEMICALLY JOINED. |
Compound | A compound is made fro two or more elements, chemically joined together. i.e water |
Mixture | A mixture consists of two or more substances ( elements and compounds ) mixed together but not chemically joined to each other. A mixture can be separated by simple methods such a filtering, evaporating etc. i.e hydrogen gas and oxygen gas |
Solvent | a liquid in which a solute dissolves i.e the water in sea water |
Solute | the substance that dissolves in a liquid to form a solution i.e the salt in sea water |
Solution | is the mixture formed when a solute has dissolved in a solvent i.e sea water |
Soluble | describes a substance that will dissolve i.e salt is soluble in water |
Insoluble | describes a substance that will not dissolve i.e sand is insoluble in water |
Homogenous mixture | uniform throughout, also called a mixture i.e air and tap water |
Heterogeneous mixture | non uniform, different phases i.e soup, concrete and granite |
Dissolving | a solid melts into a liquid ora solute to pass into a liquid |
Phase | This is a form of matter such as a solid , liquid or gas |
Phase change | is a change in the state of matter, a physical change |
Melting | is a process where a solid changes to a liquid |
Vaporization | the transition of a liquid to a gas |
Condensation | the transition of a gas to a liquid |
Sublimation | the transition from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid stage |
Deposition | the transition from a gas to a solid without passing through the liquid stage |
Freezing point | the temperature where a liquid turns to solid |
Boiling point | the temperature where a liquid changes to a gas |
