Counting on | Counting up from the smaller number to find the difference of two numbers. |
Compensation | Choosing numbers close to the numbers in a problem, and then adjusting the answer to compensate for the numbers chosen. |
Commutative Property of Addition | Numbers can be added in any order and the sum remains the same. |
Associative Property of Addition | Addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same. |
Inverse Operations | Two operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. |
Estimate | To make an approximate or rough calculation, often based on rounding. |
Identity Property of Addition | Any number added to zero (0) will give that number as the sum. |
Reasonable | An answer that makes sense and can be proven. |
Unreasonable | An answer that does NOT make sense and can't be proven. |
Regrouping | Rearranging the formation of a group. For example: a group of 10 ones can be formed into 1 ten. |
Whole Number | Any number between 0 and infinity that DOES NOT contain a fraction or a decimal. |
