Unit 2 Lit Vocab

TermDefinition
Expository Writing A type of writing that explains, defines, clarifies, or gives information about a topic.
Reflection To think about or consider something
Supporting Details Includes evidence (facts, statistics, examples, that support the topic sentence)
Verbal Communication Communicating through writing or speaking
Non Verbal Communication Communicating through movements, gestures, or facial expressions
Stanza A group of lines, usually similar in length and pattern, that form a unit within a poem
Textual Evidence Refers to quotations, summaries, or paraphrases from text passages used to support a position.
Topic Sentence States the main ideas of a paragraph.
Commentary is the writer's statements about the meaning and importance of the details and examples.
Novel is a type of literary genre that tells a fictional story. It reveals its plot through the actions, speech, and thoughts of its characters.
Subplot is a secondary plot that occurs along with a main plot.
Setting of a scene or story includes both where and when the actions takes place. Details of setting help establish a context for the events of the story.
Literary Analysis is the study of a work of literature to evaluate and interpret elements that affect a reader's understanding or opinion of the work.
Introduction is the opening part of an essay, which should get the reader's attention and indicate the topic.
Hook is in the introduction. It is a compelling idea or statement designed to get the reader's attention.
Thesis Statement is a sentence in the introduction of an essay that states the writer's position or opinion on the topic of the essay.
Conclusion is one or more paragraphs that bring the essay to a close and leave an impression with the reader.
Nonfiction is writing that is based on facts and actual events.
Fiction is writing that consists of imagined events.
Imagery refers to the descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures.
