Literary Terms 1

Springboard pg 4-18 Narrative vocabulary

TermDefinition
Narrative tells a story or describes a sequence of events
Characterization the act of creating characters
Setting the time and place where the story takes place
Conflict a struggle between characters or opposing forces
Dialogue conversation between people; the words that characters say.
Sequence to put things in an order, a set of events that follows one after another.
External conflict the character struggles with an outside force
Internal conflict the character struggles with his or her own needs or emotions.
Personal narrative a story based on one’s own life and told in the first person.
Point of view the perspective from which a story or poem is told.
First Person point of view the narrator is a character in the story using first person pronouns such as I and we to tell what he or she sees and knows.
Third Person point of view the narrator is someone outside the story using third person pronouns such as he, she and they to tell the story.
Cause and Effect describes a relationship in which an action or event will produce or cause a certain response or effect in the form of another event.
Incident the central piece of action that is the focus of the narrative. It may include the setting and dialogue
Response the immediate emotions and actions associated with the incident
Reflection a description that explores the significance of the incident
