active transport | the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration |
adaptation | a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment. |
adaptive characteristics | traits that help and organism adapt to its enviornment |
agriculture | the science of of farming |
AIDS | a disease in which there is a severe loss of the body's cellular immunity, greatly lowering the resistance to infection |
algae | a simple nonflowering plant of a large group that includes the seaweeds and many single-celled forms. Algae contain chlorophyll but lack true stems, roots, leaves, and vascular tissue. |
allergic reaction | when the immune system starts fighting substances that are usually harmless |
altered gene | changes your DNA to give you a specific trait |
amino acid | a simple organic compound containing both a carboxyl (—COOH) and an amino (—NH2) group. |
antibody | they begin to get ride of invaders that may cause harm or an infection |
antigen | a toxin or other foreign substance that may cause harm in the body |
asexual reproduction | a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes of that parent only |
atom | make up all mater |
matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
ATP molecule | energy molecule |
autotrophic | an organism capable of making its own food |
bacteria | microscopic single celled living organisms |

behavior | the way in which an animal or person acts in response to a particular situation or stimulus |
biochemical process | Chemical reactions or functions, enzymatic activities, and metabolic pathways of living things. |
biodiversity | the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. |
biological catalyst | Enzymes are soluble protein molecules that can speed up chemical reactions in cells. These reactions include respiration, photosynthesis and making new proteins. |
biological evolution | process which the characteristics of organisms change over successive generations, by means of genetic variation and natural selection. |
biosphere | regions of the earth ocupied by living organisms |
biotechnological | the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life. |
biotic resources | living things |
cancer cell | abnormal cells that stop the bodes control mechanism |
carbon dioxide | a gas formed during respiration |
carnivore | only eats meat |
cell | smallest living things |
cell membrane | surrounds cytoplasm of cell |
cellular organism | an organism that consists of only one cell |
cellular respiration | the process of oxidizing food molecules, like glucose, to carbon dioxide and water. |
