---|---|
Mediastinum | a membranous partition between two body cavities or two parts of an organ, especially that between the lungs |
Myocardium | the muscular tissue of the heart |
Endocardium | the thin, smooth membrane that lines the inside of the chambers of the heart and forms the surface of the valves |
Pericardium | the membrane enclosing the heart, consisting of an outer fibrous layer and an inner double layer of serous membrane. |
Superior Vena Cava | carrying blood from the head, arms, and upper body into the heart |
Inferior Vena Cava | carrying blood from the lower body to the heart |
Right Atrium | Upper chamber of heart, receives deoxygenated blood and pumps into the right ventricle |
Right Ventricle | ensures the flow of blood from the right atrium into the right ventricle, and prevents the reverse |
Pulmonary Trunk | major vessel of the human heart that originates from the right ventricle. |
Pulmonary Artery | the artery carrying blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs for oxygenation. |
Pulmonary Vein | a vein carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart. |
Left atrium | receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it into the left ventricle which delivers it to the body. |
Left Ventricle | receives blood from the left atrium and pumps it out under high pressure through the aorta |
Ascending Aorta | a portion of the aorta commencing at the upper part of the base of the left ventricle |
Thoracic Arch | located in the thorax, a continuation of the descending aorta and contained in the posterior mediastinal cavity |
Oxygenated Blood | Blood that carries oxygen |
Deoxygenated Blood | Blood without oxygen in it |
Systemic Circulation | blood throughout the body through the arteries, capillaries, and veins, which carry oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to various tissues and return venous blood to the right atrium. |
Pulmonary Circulation | movement of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart again. |
Aortic Arch | Curved portion between the ascending and descending portions of the aorta |
