Atoms and Matter

Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Chemistry The study of matter and how matter changes
atom basic particle from which all mater is made
proton Positive particle of the atom that is in the nucleus
neutron A neutral particle of the atom that is in the nucleus
electron negative particle of the atom that circles the atom very fast
Solid state of matter that has definite shape and definite volume
Crystalline Solid type of solid in which the particles are arranged in a crystal patter. Has a definite melting point
Amorphous Solid type of solid in which the particles have no particular pattern. Does not have a definite melting point.
Liquid state of matter that has no definite shape and a definite volume.
Gas state of matter that has no definite shape and no definite volume.
Melting When a solid's particles begin to vibrate and move away from each other to form a liquid
Freezing When a liquid's particles begin to slow down a move closer to one another forming a solid.
Vaporization When a liquid's particles begin to move extremely fast causing the liquid to become a gas.
Condensation When a gas's particles begin to slow down causing the gas to become a liquid.
physical property A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.
chemical property A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into a different substance.
density The measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume.
endothermic change A change in which energy is taken in.
exothermic change A change in which energy is given off.
physical change A change in a substance that does not change its identity.
chemical change A change in which one or more substances combine or break apart to form new substances.
electromagnetic energy A form of energy that travels through space as waves.
potential energy energy that is stored in an object
kinetic energy energy of motion of an object
