Health and Safety

Health and Safety in the Textiles room.

QuestionAnswer
What is the BIG rule when operating a sewing machine. Always make sure that you are the only person operating the machine - remember. only ONE person should operate a sewing machine at any one time.
Where should the leads be on your sewing machine? They should be on the right hand side of the machine.
Where should they NOT be? They should not be going across your lap and down onto the floor on your left hand side.
How should you pass scissors to someone? Closed, and offering the handle to them.
Why can glasses sometimes be a safety issue? If you need glasses to read with then you need to wear them to sew on a machine. They are a safety issue if you are not wearing them when you should be.
How can you make sure that you don't get hurt by the needle on the sewing machine? CONCENTRATE, don't go too fast and don't let anyone else operate your machine at the same time as you.
How can you make sure that pins are not dropped onto the floor and other surfaces? Use a pin cushion to put your pins in when you take them out of your work. Use a magnet to pick your pins up with.
Where should you put your bag in the Textiles room and why? On the shelves by the door so that it does not become a trip hazard.
What are the risks of using the iron? Tripping over the cord, burning yourself.
Why should you not have your drink bottle near to the sewing machines or computers? Because water and electricity do not mix and it is very important not to spill water near to an electrical item.
What is a quick unpick and why can it be hazardous? A quick unpick is a little tool to help unpick lines of sewing that have been done incorrectly. It is very sharp and so care must be taken when using one.
What should you wear if you are putting a zip into a product? Safety glasses.
How should you move around the classroom? Sensibly and NOT running.
Why is it important not to chatter too much when using the sewing machine? Because it can interfere with concentration and because it means that the teacher can't hear the sewing machines very well and if they are going wrong.
Why should you NOT wind the sewing machine lead around the foot control when you put the machine away? Because this damages the lead and can cause electrical faults.
Why is it important to always check the settings on your machine and the presser foot BEFORE you start sewing? Just in case a zipper foot has been left on the machine - you don't want to sew zigzag with a zipper foot on the machine.
If you are concerned that your machine is not working safely for any reason (making funny noises, light flickering, smell of burning etc) what should you do? Switch it off at the wall and tell your teacher straight away.
Where should your chair be when you are not using it and why? Safely tucked under the desk/worktop so that no one trips over it.
What MUST you do BEFORE you turn the electricity to your machine on at the wall. Make sure that the electrical lead is plugged into the machine.
What should you do when you finish using the iron? Switch it off at the wall.
