Metropolitan Water District of Southern California? -created in 1927 in order to create the Colorado River Aqueduct. -built between 1933 and 1941 -It ran a water pipeline to Los Angeles.

Clean Water Act details -Passed in 1977 -Requires anyone wanting to discharge pollutants into a body of water to obtain a permit to do so. -Also regulates types and amounts of pollutants discharged.
Point Source Discharge Permit -permit that allows one to discharge water pollutants -Obtained from National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
Clean Air Act details -Passed in 1970 -Created airsheds (Air Quality Control Regions(AQCRs) to measure air quality -Permitted air pollutants to be released including: 1) Ozone, 2) Particulate Matter, 3)Carbon Monoxide, 4)Nitrogen Dioxide, 5) Sulfur Dioxide, 6)Lead
Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD)? relates to air quality and requires that a project will not increase emissions above a specified PSD increment.
Ambient Air Quality Standards -Portions of the Clean Air Act that require metropolitan areas to meet certain standards - Cuts off funding for non-attainment areas.
NEPA of 1969 -Created Council on Environmental Quality -Requires EAs or EIS for all federal projects
Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 -Prohibits the construction of any bridge, dam, dike or causeway over navigale waterway in the US without Congressional approval -Includes wharfs, piers, or jetties and the excavation or fill of navigable waters.
Water Pollutant Control Act of 1948 -Allows Federal Works Administrator to contruct treatment plants to prevent discharges into interstate waters.
The Water Quality Act of 1965 provided construction grants for wastewater treatment facilities.
Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 focused efforts to reduce polluted runoff in 29 coastal states
Federal Water Pollutant Control Act of 1972 -Amended the Water Pollutant Act of 1948. -Changed the enforcement from water quality standards to regulating the amount of pollutants being discharged from particular point sources.
Endangered Species Act of 1973 provided protection of animal and plant species that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designate as threatened or endangered.
Public Utility Regulatory Policy Act (PURPA) of 1978 -promoted alternative energy sources, energy efficiency, and reduced dependence on foreign oil. -created a market for non-utility power producers and requires competition in the utility industry.
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 -Created a $1.6 billion Superfund to clean up abandoned hazardous waste sites and requires major industries
Recommended Residential R-Value -Residential min= 20
Indoor air pollutants -EPA's two most important: Radon and tabacco smoke -Other types include off-gassing, pesticides, cleaning fluids, cooking products.
