Light Study Guide

TermDefinition
Transparent Material an object that transmits most light that strikes it.
Translucent material An object that scatters light as it passes through it.
Opaque material an object that reflects or absorbs all of the light that strikes it.
Primary Colors Three colors that combine to make any other color.
Complementary Colors Any two colors that combine to form white light.
Pigments colored substances that are used to color other materials.
Ray Straight lines that can represent light.
Regular Reflection When parallel rays of light hit a smooth surface.
Diffuse Reflection When Parallel rays of light hit a bumpy or uneven surface.
Plane Mirror flat sheet of glass that has a smooth, silver colored coating on one side.
Concave Mirror A mirror with a surface that curves inward like th inside of a bowl.
Convex Mirror A mirror with a surface that curves outward.
index or refraction the measure of how much a ray of light bends when it enters a material.
mirage an image of a distant object that is caused by refraction of light.
Lens a curved piece of glass or other transparent material that is used to refract light.
Convex Lens Lens that is thicker in the center than the edges that bend light towards the center.
Concave Lens Lens that is thinner in the center than at the edges that spreads light out.
Cornea Transparent cover of the eye.
Pupil opening in the eye that allows light to enter the eye.
Iris Ring of muscle that contracts and expands to change the size of the pupil.
Retina Layer of cells that lines the inside of the eyeball. It is made of up Rods and Cones.
Rods Cells that allow you to see dim light
Cones Cells that allow you to see color
Optic Nerve Sends a signal to the brain along a short thick nerve.
Nearsighted eye is too long, which causes a person to see objects in the distance blurry.
farsighted eye is to short, which causes a person to see objects close up as blurry.
Telescope tool that has lenses to see objects that are far away
Microscope tool that has lenses that allow us to see objects that are very small.
