Neutron Uncharged particle
Isotope A form of a certain element with different number of neutrons in its nucleus
Molecule two or more atoms bonded together that are neutral
Molecular Compounds composed of molecules that contain more than one type of atom
Molecular Formulas Chemical formulas that indicate the actual number of atoms in a molecule
Empirical Formulas Chemical formulas that give only the relative number of atoms of each type in a molecule
Structural formula shows which atoms are attached to which in a 2D drawing
Ion Charged atoms
Cation a positively charged ion
Anion a negatively charged ion
Poly-atomic Ions are atoms joined as a molecule but carry a negative or positive charge
Ionic compounds generally combinations of metals and nonmetals
Molecular compounds generally composed of only nonmetals
Chemical nomenclature the system used in naming substances
Organic Contains carbon
Monatomic cations only have one possible charge
Polyatomic cations Have more than one possible charge
Ionic naming consist of cation name followed by anion name
Organic Chemistry the study of compounds of carbon
Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen
Alkanes(hydrocarbons simple) have each carbon bonded to four other atoms
Organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen in combination with oxygen, nitrogen, or other elements
Inorganic compounds are all other combinations different from organic compounds
